Royal Vaults

Through the time I've spent in this country (France, for the newly ones) I managed to get a catalogue of these architectural chefs-d'oeuvre that I am more than happy to share with you today.
More than a Roman fashion, these vaults perform a required resistance within a ceiling or a roof.
The sophisticated savoir faire à la française owns a large range of examples that beyond its own beauty, it is yet intriguing in terms of construction.

A Vault (Voûte en Français, Bovéda en Español), is an architectural term for an arched form used to provide space. The simplest kind of vault is the barrel vault or tunnel vault which is generally semicircular in shape. This vault is a continuous arch as a structure composed of continuous semicircular or pointed sections:

When two semicircular barrel vaults of the same diameter cross one another their intersection (a true ellipse) is known as a groin vault:

A rib vault is where the intersecting barrel vaults are not of the same diameter.
This led to a change of system, and to the introduction of a new feature, which completely revolutionized the construction flare:

Château d'Azay le Rideau
Château de Chenonceau

The fan vault was born with the employment of centerings of one curve for all the ribs. The lower portion of the arch formed part of the fan, and the upper part could be extended at pleasure with a greater radius across the vault:

and finally the Byzantine vault was carried:

Effectivement, l'évolution du décor est importante, néanmoins, comme mon texte l'indique chacune de ces voûtes a un role déterminant dans la construction et la structure du bati, repris d'ailleurs par des architects modernes, tels que Félix Candela (réferé à mon article: Hommage à l'architecte Félix Candela/ Label: Architectures)

Keep blogging,
